8 essential tips on how to keep your eyes healthy in summer

Summer means more time spending more time outside. However, increased exposure to things like sunshine, insects, and toxic plants, on the other hand, might result in itchy and unpleasant rashes. 

Along with skin, problems summers harm one’s eyes. One of the most common concerns regarding eye problems is dryness. High temperatures, fans, and air conditioning are the main factors that contribute to dry eyes. Furthermore, if you live in a more arid region, the lack of humidity might be a compounding problem, increasing your risk of dry eye. In most situations, dry eye causes significant discomfort. A few other ailments include corneal burns that occur as a result of harmful UV radiation, tired eyes and allergies.

Hence, it is essential to take good care of your eyes. Here are a few essential tips on how to keep your eyes healthy in summer:

  1. Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses have evolved from a trendy accessory into a necessity. During the summer, UVA and UVB protection sunglasses are required. This reduces the number of UV rays that reach the eyes. These rays can enter the cornea and cause damage. So, if you’re outside in the sun, make sure you’re wearing sunglasses that provide enough UV protection. If your sunglasses do not provide 100 per cent UV protection, they may be causing more harm than good to your eyes.

2. Use eye gear while swimming

Swimming is enjoyable on a hot day, but it should not be done at the expense of your vision. Many pools are treated with chlorine, which can cause eye discomfort. To avoid any severe effects on the eye, it is essential to always use eye goggles when swimming.

3. Use a hat

While sunglasses or goggles provide the first line of defence, a sun hat or visor should always be worn for further protection. A fashionable broad-brimmed hat may enhance your day. It not only adds to your style quotient but also protects your eyes. The hat deflects sunlight from all sides, providing some eye relief.

4. Eat healthy and stay hydrated 

Summer can dehydrate a person’s body completely. As a result, it’s important to stay hydrated at all times to protect the health of your eyes and keep them sparkling. It’s critical to maintain your skin and eyes well moisturised. Drink plenty of water (at least 2 litres) every day to keep your eyes and skin hydrated. Healthy eating is important for overall health, and several nutrient-rich summer foods are particularly beneficial for your eyes. A few foods that aid in keeping your eyes healthy include oranges, dark leafy green vegetables, foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like fish, and foods rich in Vitamin E like sunflower seeds.

5. Avoid direct exposure to air-conditioning

Though we need air conditioners to keep us cool during summers; we also have to be mindful to avoid staring in the direction of cool air as it might lead to dry eyes.

6. Be cautious while applying sunscreen

When applying sunscreen or sunblock, take care not to get it too close to your eyes. Summertime necessitates proper eye care. If you experience any irritation, wipe your eyes well with clean water.

7. Avoid the scorching sun

UV radiation is most intense between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. When going out, use glasses or, if feasible, avoid going out during this time.

8. Quit Smoking

Cigarette smoking, particularly passive smoking, aggravates dry eye and raises the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems. Quitting smoking lowers your chances of developing eye damage and other serious health issues.
