The nature of work and jobs is evolving. Jobs in every area, from manufacturing to information technology, are changing due to automation and artificial intelligence (AI). Self-checkout lanes, ATMs, and chatbots for customer service are just a few of the jobs that AI has altered. AI is continually changing people’s life and carrying out tasks to replace the workforce with humans. Meanwhile, new professional opportunities are being created by technological breakthroughs. What it means is that the nature of jobs is going to change.
It is predicted that AI will raise the demand for specialists, especially in robotics and software engineering. Artificial intelligence (AI), therefore, has the potential to both remove and create millions of new jobs. The danger of wiping out a significant percentage of the human workforce by eliminating the necessity for manual labour is one of AI’s numerous worries. However, it will also free people from having to do boring, repetitive work, allowing them to concentrate on more challenging and fulfilling activities.
Depending on the rate of change, automation may eliminate between 400 and 800 million jobs by 2030, forcing up to 375 million individuals to switch to entirely different career categories (McKinsey report). People may feel uneasy and worried about the future as a result of these statistics. However, history suggests that this might not be the case; there is no doubt that some industries will change to the point where they no longer need human labour, which would result in the redefinition of jobs and the reform of corporate procedures. For instance, diagnosing many medical conditions may be efficiently automated, freeing doctors to concentrate on more urgent problems. But one thing is for sure – Human labour is and will continue to be necessary for the foreseeable future in terms of totally replacing humans.
Although AI has unfathomable potential, it is also constrained. Even though it is evident on many levels that AI will rule the professional sector, still, no matter how sophisticated AI becomes, it cannot and will not be able to duplicate human awareness, which supports humans’ dominance of the food chain.
Some profiles go well beyond what AI is currently capable of, requiring creativity, imagination, intricate strategic planning, and dealing with unknown spaces, feelings, or emotional exchanges.
Now let’s discuss certain interpersonal abilities that will not be replaced by AI:
Even if automation and AI use machine learning, they are basically programmed and algorithm-based. On the other side, creativity is spontaneous and involves dreaming, imagination, and inspiration. The inability to comprehend human psychology and its nuances make it tough for AI to be creative independently. Moreover, with advancements in AI, humans can be free to take up more innovative projects.
By analysing the situation, using critical thinking in complex scenarios, and using innovative strategies, people can deal with unexpected uncertainty, which AI-powered equipment cannot perform beyond its programmed functions. This is in contrast to humans, who can function under various circumstances and barriers. Therefore, strategy and ideation will be another skill that will strive with advancements in AI.
3. Emotional Intelligence
Despite being accurate, one thing that AI lacks is cultural sensitivity and is not intuitive. Though apps like Siri are excellent in providing you with exact directions to the closest cafe, despite her best efforts and most sophisticated learning, she will never fully comprehend your emotions. No amount of technological advancement will ever be able to understand our feelings and respond to them fully. And thus, Emotional Intelligence as a skill is here to stay.
4. Tech Management
Robots cannot manage robots (Since they are robots themselves!). Any digital system will always require human design, planning, installation, and maintenance. In that sense, technology needs to be understood and used with ease. This skill will eventually rise in demand as AI becomes more prominent.
Communication skills, like EI, cannot be automated because every situation is unique and requires innovative ways of communication. Professionally speaking, it takes into account the case, the values and objectives of stakeholders, the historical context, and business goals to communicate effectively. Although facial expression recognition technology may be getting closer, it will never be able to convey emotions as well as a human.
There is absolutely no doubt that AI will shape the future, but it doesn’t mean that Humans will be out of Jobs. The simple explanation is that humans will always add value that machines cannot match. We just need to be imaginative, wise, and contextually aware for AI to function and for us to prosper with it.
