Situated 53 kilometres away from Cochin, the town is celebrated for its backwaters that connect Cochin and Kumarakom to the North. There are some beautiful attractions of Alleppey that you can’t miss and today we will take a look at some of them. Alleppey is famous for its ancient temples, serpentine canals going into the ocean, colourful lagoons, rice fields and the 150-year-old lighthouse.

  • Kuttanad Backwaters

It is one of the popular attractions of Alleppey, it is not just a place but a phenomenon. It is a breathtaking lagoon that is surrounded by lakes, rivers, canals, misty mountains and gorgeous landscapes.

The experience of floating along the ethereal backwaters on a houseboat is dreamy and beautiful. Kuttanad is also known as the ‘Rice bowl of Kerala’ for its stunning rice plantations. If you are in Alleppey for a day, you must visit it!

  • St. Mary Forane Church

This church was built in 835 AD and it is one of the most beautiful attractions of Alleppey. Currently, this church is a world-renowned centre of pilgrimage, where one can know more about the culture and lifestyle of the Christians.

It is one of the biggest churches and parishes of the Archeparchy of Changanassery. Today, it houses 2500 families and is also a popular tourist location visited by masses every year. The church organizes two feasts and festivals every year, the first one is St. Mary’s Feast as it is dedicated to Virgin Mary. This feast happens on the 3rd Sunday of September every year. People visit it and participate in the festival wearing special costumes for the procession and mass.

The other feast is St. Sebastian’s Feast. Fireworks and other stunning displays of colours make it memorable, interesting and joyful. The beautiful decorations, ancient look of the church makes it the best attraction of Alleppey.

  • Alleppey Lighthouse

The famous Alappuzha lighthouse, you can see it from miles away. A huge tower celebrating the solitude by the coastal strip wearing strips of red and white is how it reminisces.

It was built in March 1862 that is almost 150 years old. It is situated 4 kilometres ahead of the Alappuzha town and you will get a complete 360-degree view of the ocean. You can also see the territorial land of Alleppey that is thick and lush green. It is one of the famous attractions of Alleppey.

The lighthouse was built when Marthanda Varma owned the throne of the region.

  • Alleppey beach

Who doesn’t love going to beaches? It is one of those attractions of Alleppey that you can’t miss!

It is Kerala and you don’t visit beaches, not possible!

Popularly known as the ‘Venice of the East, Alleppey beach is one of the most stunning beaches in Kerala. It is a perfect getaway location for families and couples. The remain of the Alappuzha Sea Bridge also makes it one of the most popular destinations for explorers, narrating the tales of those times when Alleppey was one of the most significant port destinations in Kerala. It is close to Sea View Park where you can explore different types of fun adventure activities and boat rides. A picnic spot is located close – by where you can enjoy your day off or a vacation with your loved ones.

  • Karumadi

It is one of the major attractions of Alleppey and it holds great importance to Buddhism. It is best known for the black granite statue of Sri Buddha.

What makes this place even more mysterious is that the left-hand side of the Sri Buddha Statue is missing. Several travellers, especially the ones who are ill or someone who is ill come to this village and touches the feet of the Lord Buddha statue. It is believed that the statue has healing powers that can heal the victim.

Karumadi has many exotic restaurants where they use authentic spices of Kerala and a wide variety of South Indian dishes and cuisines.

  • Marari Beach

Marari beach is another top attraction of Alleppey, it is located close to a small village. This beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and glistening sands.

Watching sunrise and sunset here is quite a romantic experience that couples would love to enjoy. The place is rated as one of the World’s Top five Hammock Beaches by the National Geographic Survey.

  • Pathiramanal

Pathiramanal that means ‘Sands of the Night’, is a small lake island located in the backwaters of Alappuzha in Lake Vembanad. It is a paradise of more than 90 local species of birds and 50 migratory birds that make it a perfect attraction of Alleppey for bird lovers and nature lovers.

This place is completely aloof from the main city; hence you don’t need to worry about the chaos and the bustle of the town. However, there is a lack of basic facilities like places to eat, restrooms etc. It is a small island so you can roam around within an hour or two easily.
