Famous places to visit in Shillong

Shillong is a beautiful hill station in the northeastern part of India and it is the capital of Meghalaya. It is also called as the ‘Scotland of the East’ because the rolling hills around the town reminded the British of Scotland. Shillong is one of the most popular places in India for tourists. It has a unique culture and breathtaking natural beauty like wonderful waterfalls, lakes, incredible caves, botanical gardens, museum etc. There are numerable places Shillong offers to its tourists.

So, your Shillong tour remains incomplete if you don’t visit the following tourist attractions.

  • Elephant Falls

Elephant Falls is one of the main tourist attractions surrounded by the beauty of the frothy water and green forest. There is a well-paved path that will take you to the waterfall. The fascinating waterfall was named by the Britishers after a rock at its bottom that appears like an elephant. Unfortunately, the rock was later destroyed by an earthquake. The lush greenery and crystal clear water falling on the rock gives a magical sight to tourists.

  • Ward’s Lake

This is a manmade lake, constructed on the orders of Sir William Ward, giving it its name. The sprawling lotus beds on the borders of the lake and the dancing fountain shows attract the tourists. There are a lot of colourful fishes in the lake and you can also enjoy the boat ride here.

  • Shillong Peak

This peak is the highest spot in the city situated at a height of 1965 metres from sea level. You can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole Shillong with lush green surrounding, beautiful small houses and several waterfalls. This is the best place for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

  • Cherrapunjee

A must place to visit is Cherrapunjee, which is situated at two hours’ distance from Shillong and is 1,300 metres above sea level. This place is famous for having the heaviest rainfall in the world, the wettest place on Earth. The natural beauty of the area, the thunderous waterfalls and the famous limestone caves are just breathtaking.

Arwah Caves in Cherrapunjee is one of the famous caves. The dark and dank atmosphere of the cave is very thrilling as you crawl through the caves. It is very narrow in some parts that you will scare to cross it. Nature has formed the ‘limestone masterpieces’ along the walls and ceilings of the Arwah Caves which are so admirable.

So, to make your Shillong trip more memorable, don’t forget to visit these spots, full of scenic beauty and breathtaking vibes of nature.
