Mistakes To Avoid When You’re Moving House

If you’ve never moved before or it’s been a long time, you might have forgotten just how difficult it can be. It’s a stressful time that’s full of emotions, and you must be in control of what’s happening around you in order for things to go as smoothly as possible. If one small detail is overlooked, everything could become a lot harder than it needs to be. That’s why it’s crucial to know what mistakes to avoid when you’re moving home so you can get the task done without too much worry. Read on to find out what some of those mistakes are.

Not Decluttering

Neglecting to carry out a good declutter of your home before you move is a mistake you’ll regret when it comes to packing everything up and moving home. The last thing you’ll want to do when you’re going from one place to another is to take a lot of things with you that you don’t actually want. It’s far better to declutter before you start to pack because then you’ll only be taking the things you actually want in your new house with you.

Go through your things by taking one room at a time and throwing out, selling, or donating anything you don’t want in your new home. If you’re having trouble deciding what to get rid of, ask yourself if you’ve used it in the last year. If not, it might be time for it to go.

Not Booking In Advance

Another mistake a lot of people make is leaving booking a removals company until the last minute. If you do this, you’re going to find that the best ones are already booked up, and this is especially true for specialists like pool table movers. They just won’t have the trucks or the people to help you. This means you might have to turn to friends and family for help or even try to do it all yourself. You might have to hire people without any experience, which risks damage or loss to your possessions.

Make sure you book your removals as soon as you know what date you’re moving. This way, you’ll have more choice and you’ll be able to use professionals who will do the job quickly and efficiently.

Not Labeling Boxes

As you pack each box, you should write the name of the room you want that box to go to when you move to your new house. If you don’t, the removals company won’t know where to put it, and you’ll have to spend the rest of the day opening boxes until you find what you want. If you label the boxes, everything will be in the right place and unpacking will be easier.

If possible, it’s even better to make a list of everything inside the box. Use an app or write it down on a piece of paper and put that in the box so it’s the first thing you see when you open it. Unpacking becomes a breeze when you know exactly where everything is to begin with.
