There is no specific mention of bipolar disorder in Ayurveda. Charaka Samhita describes mania i.e. insanity, which affects the mind, intellect, perception, knowledge, behavioural activities. It describes five types of mania. These disorders depend on the symptoms and the involvement of the defect, which may be associated with bipolar disorder. According to Ayurveda, increased Vata causes excessive blood pressure and Pitta causes depression. Vata imbalance is the main cause of bipolar disorder. Because excessive Vata causes fear, isolation, anxiety, nervousness, nervous breakdown, mood swings, insomnia, tremors, and instability.

According to Ayurveda, a person with this disorder suffers from Vata imbalance and low Ojas. Vata governs the brain and nervous system, Ojas on the other hand represents immunity, strength, and ability. This bipolar disorder arises due to an imbalance of the three biological qualities (Vata, pitta, and Kapha) as well as the qualities of consciousness (sattva, rajas, and tamas).
